THE UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL
PRO BONO SOCIETY
For advocates of access to justice and true equality under the law.
Welcome to the University of Bristol Pro Bono Society! Our executive committee has come together to prepare for this year with a shared ethos and a shared desire to help others. Our theme for the Pro Bono Society for 2020/21 is ‘Justice’. Thinking about justice and what this means for each individual will underpin all activities we host. We think about justice in light of the past year’s serious events and in relation to the changing makeup of our world. We stand with the Black community and ethnic minorities, and all students whose studies will be adversely impacted by measures coming into place on campus.
The Pro Bono Society is not exclusive to law students, however, being a law society, we explore how the power of law can and should be harnessed to attain justice for those in need of representation. Fighting for justice may mean supporting someone through oral advocacy; it may mean the act of helping fill out a form, still making a voice heard through this.
Our committee will be bringing you an alternative programme of events, which will primarily be held remotely. We plan to be there for you with a calendar of socials to ‘meet’ like-minded members of your cohort and inspiring external speakers who have used their legal skills to help their community.
As is our tradition, we are partnering again with Bristol Law Centre as our fundraising partner. The Law Centre needs our efforts now more than ever. Finally, we bring news of our most exciting new venture. This year we launch The Tipping Scales, our official publication where students can write and read articles related to using the knowledge of law for the greater good.
Sincerely, the 2022-23 committee
